Another Global Ransomware Attack - Petya -

Last month, we alerted the community about the WannaCry ransomware attack that has targeted worldwide Microsoft Windows computers. Another ransomware attack (Petya) is taking advantage of the same vulnerabilities (appeared on Tuesday, June 27th). As the United States Computer Emergency Readiness Team (US-CERT) indicates in its warning, “Using unpatched and unsupported software may increase the risk of proliferation of cybersecurity threats, such as ransomware.”


All servers managed by ITS, including Jenzabar, Lotus Notes, N-Drive, AD, Self-printing, Databases, ... have been protected with a patch that was installed during the last Microsoft Windows update. 


Again, ITS is urging AUI users to make sure their operating systems and Symantec Endpoint Protection software are up to date (you should reboot your personal computers after the update) and to continue to do so on a regular basis.

Ransomware "wanna crypt"

What is Ransomware?

Ransomware is a type of malware that encrypts all files on your computer and network drives, and holds information hostage in an attempt to get money for its release.

Ransomware is typically spread through phishing emails that contain malicious attachments, or by visiting compromised websites.

How can I protect myself against ransomware?


·         DO NOT open suspicious email attachments or links from unknown senders.

·         Remember to keep your antivirus software current,

·         Keep your operating system and software up to date,

·         Backup your data regularly on external drives and/or use a cloud

·         service.


What should I do if my computer is infected with ransomware?


If your computer is infected with ransomware, you are urged to disconnect your laptop and immediately notify the ITS Service Desk , by submitting a ticket, calling 666 / 24 09 or stopping by ITS Service Desk (Bldg 9).
